EXTENDED Deadline: Mar. 1*
The Katharine Turner Endowed Fellowship is a cash award designed to assist doctoral candidates in the Department of English working in the field of American literature.
The award is approximately $13,000 (half distributed in the fall semester and half distributed in the spring semester).
Applicants who want to be considered for the Katharine Turner Endowed Fellowship must:
- upload one PDF document containing a letter of application (including a work plan for the proposed year of support) and a curriculum vitae; and
- provide the name, title and email address of the supervisory chair – or other close faculty mentor if a chair has not yet been selected – who must provide a letter of support. The faculty member will then receive a notice from the Scholarship Universe platform asking them to provide the recommendation.
The Awards Committee will take into consideration:
- the feasibility of the work plan described in the letter of application
- the letter of support
- the applicant’s adherence to the 5-year timeline for PhD English (literature)
- active participation in the field of American literature (for example, presentations at conferences, publications, or service).
Preference will be given to applicants who have adhered to the timeline and reached candidacy, but doctoral students at any stage in the degree program may apply.
Results of the competition will be announced later in the spring.
*The deadline has been extended because scholarship criteria were clarified and updated 2/17/26.
