What is a Research Internship Award?

A research internship pairs a student with a faculty member who does research as part of their ASU work. The student receives funding at the end of the semester for work on the research 10 hours/week. 

Students choose whether to complete the internship for academic credit or simply for experience.

Amounts

In the spring of 2026, awards of approximately $2,400 each are available for a mix of undergraduate students and graduate students. These awards are made possible with funding from an anonymous donor.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the awards, applicants must:

  1. Be an undergraduate or graduate student at ASU, online or Tempe campus, with a declared major or program of study housed in the Department of English in The College of Liberal of Arts and Sciences. This includes but may not be limited to:
    1. Creative writing
    2. Culture, technology and environment
    3. English (any concentration, including the new concentration in narrative studies)
    4. English education
    5. Film and media studies
    6. Linguistics and applied linguistics / TESOL
    7. Writing, rhetorics and literacies
  2. Articulate interest in a research area that matches an ASU Department of English faculty member’s specialty. Note that only faculty members whose responsibilities include a research component are eligible to supervise research internships.
  3. During the internship, complete 10 hours/week for the duration of the semester, reporting to the supervisory faculty member. There is no minimum enrollment status to be eligible for this award; students may be full-time, half-time, or even part-time.
