The Michael V. Sanders Memorial Scholarship provides one award annually of approximately $2,000 for undergraduate English majors in the Department of English at Arizona State University. Both online and Tempe campus students are eligible.

Heidi Sanders created this scholarship in 2025 in memory of her late husband, Michael V. Sanders, who received his BA in English from ASU in 1996. Heidi’s gift will fund an annual scholarship to an English major who, like Michael, loves writing, has career motivations, and values their humanities education as foundational to professional success.

Eligible students are:

  • Undergraduate English majors (any concentration) in the Department of English, The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, either on the Tempe campus or online.
  • Those who have at least one semester to complete and who are planning to enroll for the next fall.

Students who can demonstrate how their humanities studies might translate into a career are encouraged to apply by submitting:

  • A resume
  • A sample of academic work. This can be creative (poetry, fiction or creative nonfiction) or scholarly (critical or analytical essay). Please submit only one sample.
  • An 800-word personal statement that responds to the prompt, “What do you hope to do with your English degree?” The statement could include any of the following:
    • How the student’s humanities study might enhance their future career
    • How receiving the funding would positively impact them
    • How the student expects their study at ASU to be of benefit to the world around them
    • What impact the work they have done for their classes has had on their plans

Funding will be determined during the spring semester and awarded for the following fall.
