about the masthead image

"The Future" by Elly van Gelderen. Charcoal and pastel on paper.Elly van Gelderen. "The Future." Charcoal and pastel on paper.

Elly van Gelderen, a Regents' Professor of English in Linguistics, is also an accomplished visual artist in a variety of media. She has shown her work locally at the Memorial Union (2002) and was a regular exhibitor at English's annual Homecoming Art & Archives Gallery through 2013. About this piece, van Gelderen says, "It was based on a newspaper picture of a Timorese group of people. I was attracted by the image because there was so much visible in the faces: hope, indifference, excitement."
