Angela "Angie" O'Neal, who received her PhD from the Department of English at ASU in 2007, has been named the inaugural Joan Alden Speidel Chair in English at Shorter University, located in Rome, Georgia. O'Neal is an associate professor of English and chair of the Department of English, Modern Languages and Liberal Arts there.

According to the university: "The endowed professorship was established through a $1,000,000 gift from the estate of the late William Chase Speidel in honor of his wife, Joan Alden Speidel, a 1957 graduate of Shorter. Awarded every five years, the Speidel Chair in English will support the salary of a senior professor of national distinction in the English department at Shorter."
