Assistant Professor - Film and Media Studies (JOB#12283)

The Department of English at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in the Film and Media Studies program with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2018. We are looking for a dynamic and innovative scholar with expertise in critical and historical approaches to contemporary television and/or emerging media.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic faculty working to advance innovative research and excellence in teaching through its work with the diverse and growing undergraduate and graduate student population at Arizona State University. 

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in area of expertise and publish scholarship in top-tier outlets and provide service to the institution and the profession; develop and teach a variety of courses in the areas of Film and Media Studies and/or related studies, both undergraduate and graduate, on-ground and online, as part of our expansive online degree program, teaching load is up to two courses per semester. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Media Studies or a related field by Fall 2018
  • A record of high quality research and publication in the field or demonstrated potential to advance a compelling research agenda
  • Two years of college-level teaching experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of underrepresented student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities 
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary research and creative activity within an evolving, multi-faceted and expanding metropolitan university with a large and diverse student population
  • A record of public humanities work or demonstrated potential to advance a public humanities agenda
  • Experience with online education
  • Demonstrated ability to bridge theory in practice in both research and teaching

Instructor (Job# 12310)

The Department of English on the Tempe Campus at Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Instructor. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses primarily in the Writing Program and in other disciplinary areas within the department as needed. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment made on an academic year basis (Aug 16 – May 15). A typical full-time course load is five classes per semester. Subsequent annual renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, the needs of the unit, availability of resources, and sufficient enrollment in assigned courses. Anticipated start date is August 2018.

Minimum qualifications: MA or MFA in Creative Writing, Film & Media Studies, English Education, Linguistics, Literature, Rhetoric & Composition or related discipline; three years’ experience in higher education teaching composition courses, and evidence of effective teaching.

Desired qualifications: PhD or evidence of graduate coursework beyond the Master' level in the areas listed above; experience teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum; evidence of experience in both theory and practice within a writing intensive field, such as: academic writing, creative writing, developmental writing, disciplinary writing, second language writing, and workplace writing; evidence of participation in disciplinary conferences or other relevant professional development; evidence of experience teaching multi-media composing or online/hybrid courses.

This is a part-time, non-benefits eligible appointment made on a semester basis as needed. A typical Faculty Associate course load is one to two classes per semester. Salary is contingent upon qualifications and assigned teaching load. Subsequent semester renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, the needs of the unit, availability of resources, and sufficient enrollment in assigned courses. Teaching duties include preparing class materials, responding to and evaluating student work, and being available for one-on-one assistance (in weekly office hours for on-campus classes and electronically for online classes). Depending on time of hire, the anticipated start date will be Summer 2018, Fall 2018, or Spring 2019.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D., MA, or MFA in relevant field by time of appointment; minimum of two years of post-secondary teaching experience (to be considered for composition courses, this experience must be in composition); evidence of effective teaching.

Desired qualifications: Record of scholarly publication and/or evidence of professional development in relevant field.
