The ASU English Education Program has garnered several awards from the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN), a membership group of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
English education doctoral student Jason Griffith won ALAN’s Smith/Carlsen Grant, which offers $500 funding plus complimentary registration toward graduate student attendance at the annual ALAN conference.
A “Right to Read” column by English Education faculty members E. Sybil Durand and James Blasingame, themed “Do No Harm,” was recognized as the year’s best in The ALAN Review. The piece is an examination of who gets hurt when books are withheld from young readers. The award comes with a complementary registration to the two-day ALAN conference, which the columnists are donating to Anthony Celaya, a high school teacher at Dobson High School, in Mesa, Arizona, and a PhD student in English Education at ASU.
