Department of English Faculty Scholarship—approx. $500*
The Department of English Faculty Scholarship is for undergraduate English and Film and Media Studies majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and English Education majors in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. The approximately $500 scholarship is awarded in the spring for the upcoming fall semester. It is awarded on the basis of need as well as grades and recommendations. *Note the deadline for this award is March 8.
Don and Alleen Nilsen, professors of English at Arizona State University and co-founders of the International Society for Humor Studies established this award in 2011. This scholarship is given for the best humorous online presentation that teaches any aspect of language. The annual award competition is open to undergraduate students enrolled in an English degree program—including ASU Online students. In 2016, a total of approximately $1,000 will be awarded.
The Friends of the Department of English Scholarship is for undergraduate English and Film and Media Studies majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and English Education majors in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College (ASU Online students are eligible). The approximately $1,000 scholarship will be awarded in spring 2016 for the upcoming fall semester.
The John Doebler Memorial Award in Shakespeare and Renaissance Studies is given for the best undergraduate critical or scholarly paper written on Shakespeare or Renaissance studies. The amount is typically $500 and is awarded in the spring semester each year. Students should be in an undergraduate program in the Department of English or related area (ASU Online students are eligible).
In the spring of 2016, a scholarship of approximately $1,000 for the best short story will be awarded for the fall 2016 semester to a full-time undergraduate English major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the ASU Tempe campus.
Created in 2004-05, the Nick Ivins Memorial Literature Scholarship was established in memory of Nick Ivins (BA, English Literature, 2004). Nick’s family—parents Ed and Jaki, and sister Hayley—created this legacy of an endowed scholarship to support deserving students who love literature and who, like Nick himself, especially love the modernist work of James Joyce, author of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake. The award amount for fall 2016 is approximately $1,000. English majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, ASU Tempe campus, are eligible.
Scott Soutullo established this scholarship in 2007 to support undergraduate degree-seeking students interested in African American literature and cultural studies in the Department of English, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences—including ASU Online students. A total of approximately $1,000 will be awarded for the fall 2016 semester.
