April 23-24, 2009. Presented by the Department of English at ASU, in conjunction with the English Club @ ASU, the Black Theatre Troupe, the Arizona Humanities Council, and the ASU School of Theatre and Film.

Shaking up Shakespeare--in Scenes (a contest) 3:15-4:30 p.m. | Language and Literature (LL) 316, ASU Tempe campus All ASU students invited to participate. Hosted by the English Club @ ASU, students produce scenes from their favorite Shakespeare plays, mixing-it-up with non-traditional casting. Professor Cora Fox, graduate student Valerie Fazel and a mystery judge will choose those worthy of prizes. Free of charge and open to the public. |

Shaking up Shakespeare--"Revenge of a King" Reception 7 p.m.; Show 7:30 p.m. | Playhouse on the Park, 1850 N Central, Heavily-discounted tickets ($10) for Black Theatre Troupe’s performance of Revenge of a King, a hip hop adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Shaking up Shakespeare--Discussion and Performances 8:15 a.m.-Noon | Lyceum Theatre (LYC) ASU Tempe campus
Continental breakfast served. Actor Harry Lennix (The Matrix series; Titus) joins panelists David Hemphill (Black Theatre Troupe), professor Camilla Westenberg (Phoenix College), and professor Ayanna Thompson (ASU) in a rousing discussion about Shakespeare, hip hop and controversy. Highland High School performers and local spoken word artists join the fun.
Free of charge and open to the public.
