Reasons to Major in English

English is the most widespread language used in business around the world and is the official language for most organizations that conduct their business on an international scale. No matter who you talk to in the worlds of business, education, government or community services, you will find real-world professionals clamoring for employees with solid communication skills.

English majors, perhaps, more than in any other discipline, have these skills. An English major learns valuable analytical and communication skills through reading of complex literary texts, class discussion, frequent writing assignments and oral presentations. Majors in English find themselves well prepared for graduate school in literature, linguistics and creative writing, as well as for teaching, for law school and for other professional schools, including business and journalism, and for careers in publishing, management, advertising or almost any profession that requires critical thinking, creativity, communication and careful attention to language.

Critical Skills for All Walks of Life

Contrary to some opinions, an English major isn’t a bookish introvert poring over dusty pages of obscure novels in the library. English majors are outgoing, community-spirited individuals who strive to understand culture, society and human interactions. Studying English literature affords a thorough historical introduction beyond English and American literature into such cultures as Caribbean and Irish literature, African American literature, gay and lesbian literature, gender studies, film studies, science and literature and children’s literature. The study of rhetoric gives students tools to present themselves persuasively. Linguistics helps to anchor students in an awareness of language that reveals the broad ranges of diversity, not merely within the cultures where English is spoken, but in all cultures that rely on language as a communication tool. Technical and professional communication provides students with practical research, organization, and presentation skills.
