"Dust Storm": Emeritus Series Lecture by Roger Murray  |  McCraw Helms Writing Awards Presentation

Wed., Oct. 28, 3:15-5 p.m.  |  Language and Literature 316 (LL 316) ASU, Tempe campus

Introduced by Regents' Professor Alberto Ríos, Professor Emeritus Roger Murray reads from his new collection of poetry, "Dust Storm." Also: recipients of the Randel and Susan McCraw Helms Homecoming Writing Awards read from their winning entries. Free of charge and open to the public. Refreshments served.

 

CLAS Block Party and Picnic 

Sat., Oct. 31, Time TBA   |  Alumni Lawn: English Booth at Piper Writers House (PWH) ASU, Tempe campus

Part of the annual CLAS celebration, features a giant crossword puzzle created by ASU English Regents’ Professor Alberto Ríos, and story time with ASU English Professor Alleen Nilsen and students for youngsters age 3-8.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Call for Visual Art in all Visual Media for display in an art installation/gallery open October 26-30, 2009 in ASU’s Language and Literature Building, part of the Department of English's Come Home to English Homecoming 2009 events. The gallery accepts visual arts in any media (including digital).

NEW THIS YEAR: PORTFOLIO FEATURE. The gallery welcomes submissions of art portfolios. May include unframed or experimental pieces, or work in-progress. For more information, contact Karla.Elling@asu.edu.

Loaned pieces will be well cared for and the display monitored during open hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily) by department staff. This is an excellent opportunity for Department of English staff, faculty, alumni, students, and friends to show their artwork.

Randel and Susan McCraw Helms Homecoming Writing Contest. Randel and Susan McCraw Helms established this writing contest in 2007 to celebrate the creative and scholarly writing of undergraduate students in the Arizona State University Department of English. Prizes of $500 will be awarded in each of the following categories: poetry, short story/creative nonfiction, and scholarly essay. Awards will be presented at the Emeritus Lecture during Homecoming week, Oct. 28 (see below for details).
