Environmental Humanities Certificate
Requirements | Internships | Career Steps | Get Involved | Organizations | Reading
ASU’s Environmental Humanities Certificate offers students a humanities-based approach that explores the relationship between human culture and the environment and examines the impact of human activities on the planet. Traditionally, environmental studies programs have emphasized the physical sciences and policy studies. In complement, the Environmental Humanities bring together scholars from diverse disciplines, including the liberal and fine arts (anthropology, drama, film, geography, history, landscape design, literature, philosophy, photography, religious studies, and other areas) to illuminate not only the physical and political dimensions of the environment, but also the important ways that nature permeates our imaginative lives culturally, ideologically, and aesthetically.
Equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge of the relationships between human cultures and the rest of nature, students will be better-prepared to participate in activities that lead to meaningful social and environmental change, to make better-informed decisions regarding sustainable personal lifestyles, and to contribute to the creation of ecologically responsible public policy.
