English Education Faculty

The five of us in English education welcome you to our program (from left to right): Jim Blasingame, Jessica Early, M. Arias, Christina Saidy, and Laura Turchi. In addition to teaching, here are the things that each of us is excited about doing this year.
Dr. Jim Blasingame is continuing his work with young adult literature as the creator of the "Books for Adolescents" pages in the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. He directs CAWP (the Central Arizona Writing Project) and in the spring of 2010 when he will be on sabbatical leave will be writing a book about Stephenie Meyer and her Twilight series.
Dr. Jessica Early, Assistant Professor of English at Arizona State University, is a transdisciplinary scholar of English education and secondary literacy. Her work examines language and literacy practices in ethnically and linguistically diverse secondary English classrooms as well as the preparation of urban English teachers. Dr. Early has published widely. She is currently completing her second book, Opening the Gates: Creating Real World Writing Opportunities for Diverse Secondary Students, to be published through the Teacher College Press Language and Literacy Series. She is the author of Stirring up Justice: Reading and Writing to Change the World (Heinemann, 2006). Her research also appears in numerous scholarly journals including Bilingual Research Journal, Journal of Writing Research, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Educational Leadership, The International Journal of Teaching and Teacher Education, and Rethinking Schools. Her current research interests the teaching of real world and gate-opening written genres in urban classrooms, teaching writing in multiethnic and multilingual urban school settings, family literacy projects, and issues of equity and justice in public education.
Dr. Laura Turchi is excited about her project that explores how the virtual landscapes of on-line and digital/video games open up secondary students to the works of the great naturalists and other writers who know how to make "place" matter for readers. She is working in the Office of the Vice President for Educational Partnership to increase and support collaboration between teacher education and the humanities.
